I’ve never been the nurturing type. Most small children don’t like me and I’ve never collected wayward animals or people. Somebody, please remind my neighbor of this.
A few years ago a parakeet landed on their electrician as he was doing some work around their house. H (the neighbor) called me since we have Spike the Cockatiel and we took the parakeet, fed it, put it is Spike’s travel cage and then walked the neighborhood until we found the house the parakeet came from.
Tonight my neighbor calls me and says her husband, J, found a turtle on the road. So the princess and I walk across the street for the viewing and the princess informs us all that it isn’t a turtle but a tortoise. J had found the tortoise in the middle of a medium busy street, stopped and put on his flashers to rescue the tortoise and then went to a few houses where no body knew anyone with a tortoise so he brought it home and they called me.
Why they called, I’m not sure but as luck would have it, I know someone who knows about tortoises. So I call her but while I’m waiting for her return call, the tortoise somehow ended up in a box in my garage. The princess gave it lettuce and water and we’ve been checking on it ever since. My tortoise lady called and we discussed options….she really didn’t want to have another one but she offered to take it to make sure it was properly taken care of and then give me a list of options on how to find it a better home.
Did you know tortoises are fast??? Fast enough to cause two middle aged women, and one 8 year old to scream causing one toddler to cry and demand to be held. Yeah, that fast. So much for The Tortoise and The Hare.
I’ll report in tomorrow on where the tortoise ends up.
