Last night the princess asked me if we were Asian. This just cracked me up because no one has ever asked me if I was Asian before. We look about as far from Asian as you can look. Yeah, yeah, she’s learning and all but it was still funny.

While there isn’t a ton of racial diversity in her class, there is some. . The princess has become good friends with a girl who is of Chinese decent (I think) and they must have been talking about it. The princess was a bit confused because C (her friend) has whiter skin than she (the princess does) and yet she (the princess) is considered white and C is not. She was a bit baffled by that and really wanted to know what she could call herself. She didn’t like Caucasian much but I didn’t know what else to tell her…oh, you’re of western European decent. Sounds like a bit much.

So then she wanted to know “what are you supposed to call people who are sometimes called black but really have brown skin”. Okay, that was easy. Then she finished off with the discussion with a comment that can only make a parent proud. She says “I’m so glad we don’t have slavery any more because then we would be the boss of African American people and I’d rather have them as my best friends.” (Her most beloved baby sitter and one of her closest friends at school are African American).

I’d say we’ve done okay. She made it to almost 8 before she realized there really was a defined difference and when she did, she decided it didn’t matter.

Go princess.
