The thing about California is that you never don’t have a growing season. Oh sure, late fall (very late fall) some trees drop their leaves. And long about late December or early January we’ll have overnight temps at about freezing for a day or two so the Begonias die out. But that’s it. The grass doesn’t go dormant and most things stay living around the year.

The upside of that is it is spring out there now. The Plum trees and Acacia trees are in full bloom and there’s this really cool flowering tree that makes huge fuchsia colored blooms (but I don’t know what it is called). Some of the Camellias are budding and I’ve seen bunches of Daffodils around too.

The downside of this is that I really should have been doing some yard work in November, December and January because along with the plants that never die, neither do the weeds. I spent about 2 hours today in the yard and you’d never know it and there is so much more to do.

All this would be fine, I suppose if one lived in Southern CA. Then the temps are warm enough to actually work in your yard in those winter months. But here, there seems to be 5 days of rain every week (hello, pacificnorthwest) and one cold sunny day and one cold cloudy day. I’ve yet to figure out how I’m supposed to keep up with my yard during Nov, Dec and Jan because I’m not pulling weeds in the rain. Nosirreeee. We won’t talk about the fact that because of all this dampness my right elbow, hips and hands are in agony.

Oh, and I’ve got moss on my patio. For crying out loud…moss isn’t supposed to exist in California.

Yeah, yeah. I should just be happy it isn’t snowy and minus 20. And I am. And I’m happy to see the Daffodils since they are my absolute favorite flower ever and you don’t get to see them for very long. And I’m happy to see the Acacia trees because they are so cool and yellow. And I’m so glad I don’t have to shovel my driveway to get my car out.

I’ll just be a tad bit happier when it is sunny and 70.
